Mock me during my class? Get an F. I teach English at a university in South Korea. I enjoy the job, and generally have good rapport with my students and very few, if any, complaints.

A few years ago, I was teaching a class, and there were three male students who always sat at the back of the class. The ringleader was always making (what appeared to me to be) snide

remarks whenever I was speaking, and the other two always laughed at what he said. This happened a lot, over several weeks.

One day I'd had enough, and pulled the three of them to one side after class. I told them I was tired of the constant snide remarks, and laughing (it was all

in Korean, but all still sounded disrespectful to me with all the laughing and the timing of it all it was always after I'd finished speaking), and that I wouldn't stand for it.

The two who were constantly laughing heeded the warning, and stopped. The ringleader continued with the remarks, but the other two stayed stony- faced.

write a new exam (required, as all the other students had already sat the exam) just for him. I said no. He asked if he could still pass the course with 0% midterm score. I said it was possible, if he aced the final exam, and had good attendance.

He was actually quite good at English and aced the final exam, and had good attendance. However, part of the grade in Korean universities is 'participation, which combines

effort in class, attitude, and so on. Even with his zero for the midterm, he was getting a C grade. I gave him 0/20 for his participation in class, which is entirely my call, which dropped him to 58%, and gave him a F.

ArynManDad 4h ago Being a teacher is hard enough without having to deal with this kind of stuff. Good on you OP for standing your ground. What irks me even more is that the students didn't even have the grace to apologize when called out.

course I hope that their poor behavior never gets to the level that these students committed. It's a novel. There is a second book in the series but it's just meh. It's titled Penance.
